Women’s Voices for the Earth Keeps Watch on Salon Safety

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has an ally in Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE) as far as keeping beauty salon clients and salon workers safe from dangerous chemicals found at the salon.

Last year, OSHA as the government’s watchdog for workplace safety, cited 23 salon owners, three manufacturers, and two distributors in connection with Brazilian Blowout, a popular hair-straightening treatment that uses a substance containing formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen.

In most states, salon workers and cosmetologists—from those who have taken Kentucky cosmetology CE to those taking Texas cosmetology CE to renew their cosmetology license—are cautioned in cosmetology class against known and hidden dangers at salons. However, mislabeled products such the Brazilian Blowout hair product, are a particular concern.

WVE was one of the few organizations that had been campaigning last year on salon-safety issues, including dangerous chemicals in hair-treatment products, before the Brazilian Blowout maker struck a deal with the California attorney general.

WVE reports that the popular hair-straightening treatment now comes with a warning label in California as part of the settlement. The settlement mandates that hair stylists and their customers be warned of the dangers of exposure to a cancer-causing chemical such as formaldehyde. It also requires the manufacturers to post the carcinogen warning on websites, and confine sale of the products to licensed stylists and cosmetologists.

Cosmetologycampus.com, a top provider of online training for cosmetologists, provides not just a fully online cosmetology CE program towards a cosmetology license but also important information on chemicals found in salons that can impact the health and safety of clients and workers alike.
